DAY 1
ARRIVAL TO SAN SEBASTIAN: CITY TOUR & PINTXO TOUR
Today your private transfer will bring you from the airport to the city of San Sebastian.
After your check in our guides will take you to the most essential parts of San Sebastian, introducing you to the cities best kept secrets as they make you go back in time with unusual anecdotes.
Walk through its old town, see its museums and cathedral in the city centre or drive up to Monte Igueldo, to get the most beautiful views of San Sebastian. Followed by a short stop in the “Peine de los Vientos”, sculpture by the Basque artist Eduardo Chillida, one of the most symbolic places of the city.
After we have seen the highlights of the city it is time to indulge in the finest pintos San Sebastian has to offer while traversing the vibrant quarters of the Old Town with our expert guide.
DAY 2 – NATURAL PARK OF ARTIKUTZA
The natural park of Artikutza is a clear example of an isolated paradise and is a very characteristic dense forest in the Basque Country. It consists of beech forests, mainly oak and yews in which there has been little human intervention, in recent years. This marvellous forest hosts a village lost in time, which is only accessible by foot, and where you will feel like being in an old tale.
From the summit of the mountain we can see part of the French and Spanish Basque Coast. You will feel as if you are in the top of the world, even though you are only 800m high.
Once we start descending, we will walk through beautiful fields and enter the lush forest to get to the enchanted village of Artikutza where we will have a delicious traditional lunch.
DAY 3 – NATURAL PARK OF ARALAR
The day starts in Zaldibia, where we follow a Roman road through the mountain till we reach the fields of Uidui, visiting one of the better preserved Dolmen in the Jentilarri area. There we will meet a shepherd who will show us the secrets of the perfect cheese maker.
After we have tried some homemade cheese, we will continue our trekking to the Lareo reservoir. And to end our experience, we will enjoy an amazing meal in Lizarrusti.
DAY 4 – NATURAL PARK URBASA
Urbasa is the paradise of water and forests, as its name in Basque indicates (ur = water; basa = forest). The Urbasa natural park is a vast plateau with meadows which get flooded in spring, and beech forests delimited stunning natural viewpoints.
This day, our route this day starts entering the enchanting beech forests to reach the spectacular “Balcón de Pilatos” (Pilate’s Balcony), an impressive Basque Cliff witness of some of the most harsh episodes of the Spanish Civil War. From up here we’ll be able to admire the spectacular beauty of the Urederra river source natural reserve. Then, we’ll go down a little path towards the Urederra source and we’ll follow the river until the Baquedano village, where our journey will end.
We will have lunch in this place before heading back to our Hotel in Alaska.
DAY 5 – NATURAL PARK OF AIZKORRI
Starting off from the Sanctuary at Arantzazu at the Aizkorri mountain (1528m) with its impressive 1950’s Basilica, we follow the ancient shepherd’s route through the Urbia meadows, passing through lovely pastures and a rolling landscape. This day will be spend in the incredible Basque countryside, famed for its beauty. After our hike of today we will be take our private transfer to Zegama, where we will be visiting the Interpretation Center of Aizkorri. After this explanation we will visit an old Hydraulic Sawmill and the beautiful town of Zerain. In Zerain we will be staying at a beautiful country house and have the opportunity to try the local Cider in their Cider House for dinner.
DAY 6 – NATURAL PARK OF URKIOLA
After breakfast we head to the Monastery of Urkiola. This natural park is one where the Basque mythology is very present and our guides will be telling you for example about the legend of Mari. During our trekking will be able to visit the ́Eskilaz ́ caves. We will finish this morning in the town of Arrazola. From here we will take our private transfer to Elorrio where we will have a txakoli (Basque white wine) tasting.
After our txakoli tasting we will be heading to the town of Oñati where we will dine and sleep.
DAY 7 – NATURAL PARK OF GORBEA
Our tour along the national parks will finish at the Gorbea natural park, the biggest in the Basque Country. The day will begin in Areatza, with a tour in the protected biotope of Itxina, an impressive karstic massif where we’ll see spectacular natural formations such as the Ojo de Atxular and the Supelegor cave, both packed with myths and legends. After many days trekking the Basque Highlands we will head back to San Sebastian, where we will enjoy a farewell dinner and relax in your hotel.
DAY 8 – DEPARTURE
Everything has to come to an end! After 7 fabulous visiting the Natural Parks of the Basque Country, it is time to take you to Bilbao’s airport and say good bye.
