Norway Northern Lights Holiday

Norway Northern Lights Holiday

Norway Northern Lights Holiday

This 5 day Norway Northern Lights Holiday offers you the opportunity to experience it all. Tromsø “The capital of the Arctic” is a lively and beautiful city. Tromsø is packed with culture and history and surrounded by mountains, fjords and islands.

Tromsø is one of the best places on earth to observe the Northern lights, with all the comfort of city life combined with wild nature right outside your hotel door. In Tromsø, the highest northern lights frequency is between 18:00 and 01:00, and the best months for the Norway Northern Lights Holiday are December, January, February and March.

However, there are Northern Lights tours starting in September. Spotting the aurora borealis depends on solar activity and the weather – so as long as it is dark, there is a chance to see the lights.

There is also Northern Norway’s coastal culture and traditions on the remote island of Sommarøy. We have combined unique day activities with Northern Lights hunting in the evening for you to experience the best that Tromsø and its surroundings have to offer.

Norway Northern Lights Holiday Itinerary

Day 1:
On arrival at Tromsø Airport, you need to take the Airport Express Coach or a taxi on your
own to Clarion Collection Hotel Aurora.
Clarion Collection Hotel Aurora enjoys a central location on Sjøgata pedestrian street,
only 250 m from the Hurtigruten Cruise Ship Terminal. It offers free Wi-Fi and panoramic
views of the mountains and the Tromsøysund. Leisure facilities include a gym and outdoor
hot tub from where guests might catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights during winter.

Day 2:
Breakfast will be served at the Clarion Collection Hotel Aurora then Join us for an exciting dog sledding adventure in scenic surroundings.
Just a 40-minute drive from downtown Tromsø, you will discover our Husky Farm, beautifully situated in the Arctic valley landscape. The view of the Lyngen Alps combined with the fjords is amazing, making this safari a genuine North Norwegian Arctic Experience.

You will be greeted by 120 happy Alaskan Huskies waiting for you to run and cuddle! Drive your own team of dogs through the scenic landscape. We provide warm thermal suits, winter boots and gloves to keep you warm during the dog sledging adventure.

After a short explanation (in English!) on how to handle the dogs and sledges, you will set off in pairs. One will be the “musher” (driver) and the other sits in the sled. You swap places during the trip.
The Huskies love running on the hilly tracks and wilderness of Breivikeidet valley, but you need to be part of the team and help them up to the hills. It’s a fun experience, but also a physical workout.
English-speaking guides will lead groups of four teams and help you through the experience, which lasts 60 to 90 minutes.

Meeting time and place:
08.15 (8.15am) Radisson Blu Hotel

Included:
• Return scenic transfers by comfortable coach (40 min each way)
• Knowledgeable English-speaking guides
• Thermal winter suits, winter boots, socks, gloves and hats

At other times of the year, we offer a marine mammal safari (white-tailed eagle and seals). The tour takes around two hours, followed by lunch at the hotel. You have the afternoon at your leisure to explore the unique island of Sommarøy. A three-course dinner is served in the evening.
In the evening, you have another opportunity to see the Northern Lights, this time on your own. You will spend the night at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel.

Day 4:
Breakfast is served at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel.
After breakfast, you travel by bus back to Tromsø and return to Clarion Collection Aurora.
Afternoon at leisure to explore Trosmo. Optional activities include snowshoeing, cross country skiing, Reindeer Sledding & Sami Culture, ice fishing, Lyngen Snowmobile Safari. See the price tab for details.

In the evening enjoy a 4-5 hour guided Aurora Safari Base Stations trip with Arctic Guide Service.
You will be back at the hotel around midnight.

Aurora Safari Base Station is our well-established comfortable and social Northern Lights Safari to our perfectly located private base stations with local hospitality.
We have six private and safe Base Stations located in different areas to cover different weather regimes, giving us a hit rate of 85% last season. We have a local host, warm shelters (lavvu or other buildings), toilet facilities, thermal winter suits and tripods, as well as campfires and benches outside (N.B: The campfire is subject to weather conditions).

The system involving Base Stations is unique to Tromsø Safari. Based on our experience of more than 16 years, around 4,500 Northern Lights Safaris, the latest weather forecast, wind direction and the hosts at the Base Stations, we choose the Base Station or stations with the best chances of clear sky and, therefore, of experiencing the Northern Lights.

If the weather changes and clouds move in, we check with our network if it would be better to move to another location. And if so, we finish our meal, hot drinks and “lefse” (a local sweet snack) before leaving to look for clear skies somewhere else. In these circumstances, we will stay along the roads searching for a clear sky.
Our focus on this trip is always to show you the Northern Lights!

Extra: Hot soup or stew (vegetarian option available on request when booking)
We offer hot soup or stew at the Base Station. We serve locally made food. This may be reindeer stew or fish soup. A vegetarian alternative is available on request when booking. The food should be ordered no later than 16.00 (4pm) on the day of the tour.
