Cycling Tour Lake Constance

Cycling Tour Lake Constance

The Lake Constance cycle path is one of Europe’s most popular cycle routes. On this varied tour you will cycle round the entire lake pedalling through three countries as you do so! The highlights are the medieval towns of Konstanz, Stein, Meersburg and Schaffhausen. Not to forget the Rhine Falls, which you get to see up close on a boat trip to the Rhine Falls rocks. The daily sections of the route, through charming countryside, are not too long, making this tour perfect also for people who are not so used to cycling. And there is so much to see and explore on the way that the time in the saddle will simply fly by.

All of the important sights described in tour guides are included in this tour as well as many trips by the boats of the “White Fleet”. You can choose whether you want to try out our tour suggestions or put a tour together yourself. As each daily tour is planned individually and any number of rest days can be scheduled as you want, is ideal for families.

Day 1 Individual arrival in Constance/Kreuzlingen

You start your tour in Constance, Lake Constance’s biggest town. 600 years ago this was where the Council of Constance took place, the only council to elect a pope that was held north of the Alps. The Rhine leaves Lake Constance here: 0 kilometres on its way to the North Sea. Only a few minutes by foot from the medieval town centre is the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen with its lively harbour.
Overnight stay in Constance/Kreuzlingen

Day 2 Constance ‒ Island of Reichenau ‒ Schaffhausen,
approx. 50 km + boat trip

This section takes you to the vegetable island of Reichenau, whose monastery was extremely influential in the 10th century. In 2001 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. By boat you sail over to Gaienhofen and cycle along the Höri peninsula, where author Hermann Hesse once lived. You cross the “green border” into the Swiss town of Stein am Rhein, which has a very picturesque old town. From here it is not far to Schaffhausen.
Overnight stay in Schaffhausen

Day 3 Schaffhausen ‒ Constance/Kreuzlingen, approx. 50 km

The Rhine Falls are great! In the summer, roughly 600,000 litres of water per second crash over Europe’s biggest water fall. Right in the middle of this mass of water are the Rhine Fall rocks which you can reach by boat. After the thrill of the boat trip, you cycle along the Rhine. You can take a break on the island of Werd and then continue on the Lake Constance Cycle Path back to Konstanz.
Overnight stay in Constance

Day 4 Constance ‒ Immenstaad/Friedrichshafen, approx. 40-50 km + boat trip

Having been able to relax you now cycle to Wallhausen to then cross the Überlinger See lake by boat. Your tour continues to pass the Pfahlbauten lake dwelling museum and the pilgrimage Birnau church. Meersburg, an unspoiled medieval town, enjoys an idyllic location on the steep slopes of the vineyards here. After a tour of the castle, continue cycling through the vineyards on your way to Friedrichshafen.
Overnight stay in the Friedrichshafen region

Day 5 Friedrichshafen ‒ Lindau/Bregenz, approx. 30-45 km

Today the tour first takes you through Langenargen. Here you’ll find the charming Castle Montfort, built in a Moorish style. Next, you will be cycling through orchards until you reach the Bavarian town of Lindau, whose harbour is watched over by a lion. After only a few kilometres you arrive in Austria and cycle right along the banks of the lake to the festival town of Bregenz.
Overnight stay in Lindau/Bregenz

Day 6 Lindau/Bregenz ‒ Rorschach/Arbon, approx. 30-50 km

Wander through the town of Bregenz and enjoy its beautifully preserved upper town. Once you arrive in Hard, you cross the Rhine, which flows in from the Swiss Alps. Now you are on Swiss ground, in Altenrhein, and you will see the Hundertwasser hall, the last colorful building made by the famous artist. You cycle along the banks of the lake to the old harbour town of Rorschach.
Overnight stay in Rorschach/Arbon

Day 7 Rorschach ‒ Constance/Kreuzlingen, approx. 30-45 km

The last day on your tour on the Lake Constance Cycle Path is devoted to the Canton of Thurgau, which is endearingly known as (Cider India) because of its huge apple orchards and slightly remote location, at least from the Swiss perspective. The route takes you along the banks of the lake. If you like you can stay an extra night in Rorschach and combine this with a trip to the Appenzeller Land.
Overnight stay in Constance/Kreuzlingen
