California Mountain Bike holiday

California Mountain Bike holiday – The Great Lost Coast Adventure

Lose yourself on sublime singletrack along Northern California’s most rugged and deserted coastline. Breathe deep and let your cares fall away among the world’s oldest and tallest Redwood trees. Epic trails and world class scenery combine effortlessly on this trip of a lifetime.

Starting in the quirky coastal town of Arcata, let your hair down as we sample some of the wild trails and unmatched natural beauty the north coast has to offer. Leave your cares behind as we head down to the Great Lost Coast, an area so rugged, the iconic Highway 1, which travels the coast from Canada to Mexico, was forced inland, leaving behind a slice of untouched coastal paradise for the exploration of the hardy few who make the trek to the remote outposts that dot the coastline.
Here we’ll ride purpose built mountain biking trails, and hike desolate black sand beaches. Stop and take a moment to savor the fresh coastal breeze on your face and realize that little has changed here since explorers first came upon the same shores. Inland, we’ll stand in awe of some of the oldest and tallest Redwood trees in the world.

As we continue south towards the picturesque seaside village of Mendocino, revel in a mix of old lumber industry heritage, small town americana and new-age self-exiles. Join us in exploring the area’s beautiful trails and serene beaches, taking lots of pictures and maybe just a little of the off-the-wall coastal spirit home with you.

Itinerary Disclaimer: While it is our intention to adhere to the itinerary described below, adventure travel can be unpredictable and may result in necessary or desirable alterations to the trails we ride, accommodation we stay in and destinations we visit.

DAY 1. ARRIVE IN ARCATA
After meeting your guides at the Arcata airport, we’ll check into our hotel and head out for a welcome drink at the local wine bar in downtown Arcata, the hip northern outpost on our adventure.

DAY 2. ARCATA
After a hearty breakfast, we’ll build our bikes and spend an hour warming up with some skills drills.

We’ll then hit the local singletrack in the community forest to get the riding started. The handbuilt redwood singletrack never disappoints!

We’ll ride right back into town for a sit down lunch before heading out for some afternoon shuttled descents on the leafy Tish Tang trail.

After a refreshing Creek dip and beer to toast our first day, we’ll shower up and choose our first night’s dinner options.

DAY 3. REDWOOD COUNTRY
This morning we start our journey South, heading down into giant Redwood country to ride a hidden gem.

After a smooth climb up to a ridge of Redwoods, we’ll eat lunch on top of the ridgeline, before starting our ripping descent down Thornton Prairie trail. If you aren’t hoarse from the hoots and hollers on the 2,500 ft descent, the protected Giant Redwood hike afterwards will certainly awe you into silence. If these 2,000 year old trees could speak!

En route to our hotel, we’ll take a drive down the famous Avenue of the Giants before checking into our local Bed and Breakfast for the evening. Here, you’ll get a chance to experience a historic saloon or visit a drive through tree.

DAY 4. THE GREAT LOST COAST
Today, after a delicious breakfast made by our innkeeper, we’ll venture out to the Great Lost Coast – the only stretch of California’s coastline deemed to be too steep for development during the 1930’s construction of coastal Highway 1.

This beautifully secluded area is where we’ll have some of the flowiest singletrack in the country on IMBA’s Paradise Royal Trail all to ourselves.

Afterwards, we can session the skills park, with 3 different trail loops, before driving down to the famous Black Sand Beach to toast the day’s riding with an ice cold beer.

Tonight, we’ll dine al fresco with a cliffside BBQ at our hotel and take in the sunset from the oceanfront deck or hot tub.

DAY 5. PARADISE LOST
This morning, riders will get to choose between riding more of Paradise Royal and it’s newest trail (it’s really that good!), taking a shuttled hike down to the Lost Coast trail, or just sleeping in and taking a rest day.

In the afternoon, we’ll head south for Mendocino, a trip you’ll certainly want your camera for!

DAY 6. MENDOCINO COAST
Today, you’ll wake up to the smell of a fresh, homestyle breakfast, before heading out from our private house in Mendocino for an epic tour of the area’s classics like Manly Gulch and Big Tree.

We’ll take a break for a seaside picnic-style lunch and spend the afternoon exploring the scenic bluffs and historic coastal town. If your legs are up for it, we can go for a quick evening lap of the trails.

You’ll want to save your appetite for tonight, as we eat in one of the best restaurants in town.

DAY 7. MENDO CONTINUED
Today, we save the best for last, with some of the most fun handbuilt singletrack of the week, including Caspar Crossing North, Ride Through Tree and Gunslinger.

We’ll stop for a lunch in Mendocino, and in the afternoon, riders often opt for a relaxing free afternoon to nap and hot tub, or we can take an optional river kayak to look for wildlife.

Tonight, we’ll enjoy our last dinner together, sharing memories from the incredible rides and views of the week.

DAY 8. THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE MOUNTAIN BIKE
This last morning, we’ll depart for Marin County, the birthplace of the Mountain Bike, where we’ll spend the day riding the private trails of Tamarancho.

In the afternoon, we’ll stop for lunch and a brew at the Gestalt House (rated Top 10 Cycling Bars in the World by Outside Magazine), and a visit to the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, before saying our goodbyes.
